COLWELL- I am looking for information on George W. Colwell and his wife Ellen Jane. Their son James William, my Grandfather, was born in Canada on 2/19/1876 but I am not sure that it was in Albert County. James' marriage certificate lists Elgin as the city where his father George was born. George's occupation is listed as a Tanner. By the time that James married, he was living in Rib Lake, WI, USA. Any help would be most appreciated.   Thanks, Joan Colwell Stevenson

CANNON. I am in search of information on the Cannon / Canning surname in Albert County. I have a good start but am lacking in links to Charles Cannon/Canning who came to this area of New Brunswick from Falmouth, Nova Scotia about 1793 to start the surname here. Who did he marry? Did he have issue? Most of this surname have probably moved on to the larger centers of Moncton etc., but there are probably some in Albert County yet. I would appreciate any help you have to offer.

CALHOUNS. I would, however, be happy to offer assistance to any visitors to the web site who might be interested in the Calhouns of Albert County. Thomas Calhoun was born 1735 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of John Cohoon, an immigrant from County Donegal, Ireland about 1714.

Thomas Calhoun was a licensed Indian Trader
on the western frontier in 1760 with a trading post near Tuscarawas in present day
Ohio. He was closely associated with Fort Pitt and the Army officers who served in that region.

In 1765, Thomas went to
Cumberland County, Nova Scotia to manage a large land grant along the south bank of the Petitcodiac River in what is now Albert County, New Brunswick. He married Rachael Peck, daughter of Abiel Peck there in 1768. Thomas and Rachael are the progenitors of hundreds of Calhoun descendants, some of whom still reside in Albert and Westmorland Counties.

In 1772, Thomas, along with one of his brothers, one of his wife's brothers, and a couple others were drowned while loading a boat with grindstones from
Grindstone Island near the mouth of the Shepody River. Thomas is buried in Riverside Cemetery, just north of Riverside-Albert within view of Grindstone Island.

I wrote a book about the Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Calhoun in 1994 and have continued to compile information about this fascinating family.

I would be happy to offer assistance to anyone researching this Calhoun family.

Thanks.

COLPITTS I am seeking the parents of William L. Colpitts, born between the late 1820 - and early 1830's. His youngest son John Wetmore Colpitts death certificate lists his dad as born in "Little River," Albert Co., NB. William L. married ?, Mary Jane Crossman about 1864, as James Oscar Colpitts was born on April 19, 1865 in Weldon, Albert Co. Then there is a space of 10 years (why?) when my grandfather, Howard Judson Colpitts was born on April 2, 1875, followed by John Wetmore Colpitts on March 8, 1877, both were born in Hillsboro, Albert Co. NB. They lived like a family from 1871 to 1881 until 1891 when only Mary Jane and the 3 boys were living in Moncton, NB. The 1889 street directories list her as "Colpitts Mrs. Wm. h. 10 Telegraph St." but list her in 1896 as "Colpitts Mary J., with William L. Colpitts, h Queen St. " So William L. Colpitts  had died between 1889 & 1896. Mary Jane Crossman parents were Rufus & Claricy Crossman of Coverdale, Albert Co., NB. In 1889, Claricy was living across the street from her daughter Mary Jane in at 9 Telegraph St, Moncton.  Any help in solving William (L) Colpitts parents would be appreciated.

COOK. Requesting any information or suggestions re: William H. Cook 1844 - 1919 born and buried in Moncton according to death record I obtained from August ME. His father is listed as Alexander Cook - mother M. Durrrr (Dunn -maybe) both from England. Date of Burial August 14, 1919. Date of Death Aug. 12, 1919 in Caribou, Maine. My great grandfather was a William H. Cook married (I think) to Margaret Seeley in Easton, Maine. I found an 1880 Census which listed both of them in Easton along with children. My great grandmother is buried in Fort Fairfield, Maine - Margaret Seeley Cook. My Mom said William H. was buried next to his first wife (she thought he was born and buried in Nova Scotia). I have made two trips to Maine (Easton & Fort Fairfield) and checked all town records available.

Thanks for any help.
